Forests, Water and Equality Take Center Stage at Global FAO Event

A global conversation on the vital link between forests and water is set to take place on 19 March, as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) hosts a special event marking both International Day of Forests and World Water Day 2026.
The virtual event, scheduled for 11:00 (UTC+1), will bring together international experts, policymakers, and practitioners to highlight the crucial role forests play in sustaining global water systems. Forest ecosystems are widely recognized for regulating water cycles, maintaining soil moisture, reducing flood risks, and supporting agriculture-dependent communities.
FAO emphasizes that the relationship between forests and water goes beyond environmental benefits-it directly affects livelihoods, food security, and economic resilience, particularly in vulnerable regions. As climate change intensifies water scarcity and ecosystem degradation, integrated forest and water management is increasingly seen as essential for sustainable development.
A key focus of the event will be gender equality in water governance. Experts will underline how inclusive decision-making-especially the involvement of women in water resource management-can significantly improve community outcomes and long-term sustainability. This aligns with broader global commitments to equitable resource distribution and climate resilience.
The program will also feature country-level experiences, offering insights into practical solutions and policies that link forest conservation with water security. Adding a creative dimension, artist Elisa will contribute a special segment highlighting the cultural and emotional connection between nature and human well-being.
The event will be streamed live with interpretation available in six languages, ensuring global accessibility and participation.
As nations face increasing environmental pressures, the FAO-led dialogue aims to reinforce the message that protecting forests is not only about conserving biodiversity-but also about securing water resources and promoting social equity for future generations.
