Border Market Emerges at Korala Naka, Supporting Local Livelihoods in Upper Mustang

Mustang, Nepal - A small but vibrant border market has been operating at Korala Naka, located in Lomanthang Rural Municipality of Upper Mustang, along the Nepal-China border. Local residents from nearby settlements have set up temporary stalls using tarpaulins in the no-man’s-land (Dasgaja area), creating a modest marketplace that caters mainly to visiting tourists.
According to local sources, nearly one hundred households from Lomanthang Rural Municipality have been involved in operating the market. The vendors primarily sell Chinese-made goods and souvenirs, which tourists purchase as mementos during their visits to the high Himalayan border region.
Korala Naka has historically served as an important traditional trade route between Nepal and Tibet. In recent years, with increasing attention on cross-border connectivity and tourism in Upper Mustang, local communities have begun exploring small-scale economic opportunities such as this informal marketplace.
Residents say the initiative helps generate supplementary income for households living in the remote trans-Himalayan region, where economic opportunities remain limited due to the harsh climate and geographic isolation. The market has gradually become a small attraction for travelers visiting the historic region of Lo Manthang, often referred to as the “walled city” of Mustang.
Local stakeholders note that while the market is currently informal and seasonal, it reflects the entrepreneurial efforts of border communities to benefit from tourism and potential cross-border trade in the future.
Observers also point out that proper management, infrastructure support, and regulatory clarity could help ensure that such local initiatives contribute sustainably to regional economic development while maintaining border security and environmental balance in the fragile Himalayan landscape.
As Nepal continues to discuss strengthening cross-border connectivity with its northern neighbor, local initiatives like the Korala Naka market demonstrate how border communities are already seeking practical ways to participate in emerging economic opportunities.
