Urban Forests Can Reduce Extreme Heat by Up to 5-6°C, Boosting Climate Resilience in Cities

Kathmandu - Cities around the world are increasingly turning to urban forests and green spaces as a natural solution to combat rising temperatures and climate-related risks. Experts say that planting trees and expanding urban green areas can significantly reduce heat in densely populated areas while also improving environmental quality and human well-being.
According to findings highlighted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), urban forests can lower local land temperatures by up to 5-6°C during periods of extreme heat, helping cities cope with intensifying heatwaves. This cooling effect not only enhances the quality of life for urban residents but also reduces energy demand for air conditioning and cooling systems.
Scientific studies support these findings, showing that trees and urban vegetation can reduce air temperatures by roughly 0.5°C to nearly 6°C depending on canopy density, climate conditions, and urban design. Trees cool their surroundings primarily through shade and evapotranspiration, a natural process where water released from leaves helps lower ambient temperatures.
Urban greenery also plays a vital role in mitigating the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon where cities become significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to concrete surfaces, dense infrastructure, and limited vegetation. By intercepting solar radiation and cooling the air, tree canopies help stabilize urban microclimates and improve thermal comfort for residents.
Beyond temperature reduction, urban forests deliver multiple environmental and social benefits. They help improve air quality, reduce energy consumption, enhance biodiversity, and provide recreational and mental health benefits for city populations. Researchers also note that expanding tree canopy coverage can help address heat-related health risks, especially for vulnerable communities living in densely built neighborhoods.
With climate change intensifying heatwaves worldwide, environmental planners and urban policymakers are increasingly emphasizing nature-based solutions, such as tree planting and urban forest restoration, to make cities more resilient and sustainable.
Experts stress that integrating green infrastructure into urban planning will be crucial for protecting public health, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring a more livable environment in the face of a warming climate.
