World Hypertension Day 2026 Observed in Nepal With Call for Regular Blood Pressure Checks

Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal marked World Hypertension Day 2026 on Sunday with a renewed public health appeal encouraging citizens to regularly monitor their blood pressure and adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
This year’s observance is being held under the slogan, “Everyone’s support for controlling hypertension: Let us regularly check blood pressure and defeat the silent cause of death.” Health authorities highlighted that hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, often develops without visible symptoms, earning it the global reputation of being a “Silent Killer.”
According to information shared by Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), nearly 24.5 percent of adults in Nepal are affected by high blood pressure. Health experts warn that unmanaged hypertension significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious complications.
The Ministry has urged all individuals above the age of 30 to check their blood pressure at least once every year. Public health officials have also emphasized the importance of reducing salt and fatty foods in daily diets while increasing the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.
In addition, citizens have been encouraged to engage in regular physical activity for at least 30 to 45 minutes daily and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Patients already diagnosed with hypertension have been advised not to discontinue medication without medical consultation.
Health authorities say lifestyle modification, early detection, and regular monitoring remain among the most effective ways to prevent complications associated with hypertension and other non-communicable diseases in Nepal.
As cases of lifestyle-related illnesses continue to rise globally and nationally, medical professionals stress that awareness campaigns such as World Hypertension Day play an important role in encouraging preventive healthcare practices and strengthening public understanding of cardiovascular health.
