Rising Dust and Pollution Raise Concerns in Nepal

Kathmandu - Nepal’s natural beauty, known worldwide for its mountains, forests, and clean air, is increasingly being overshadowed by growing dust and pollution, especially in urban areas such as Kathmandu. Environmental observers and citizens alike have expressed concern over deteriorating air quality, which continues to affect daily life and public health.
Experts say the problem is driven by a combination of factors, including unmanaged construction activities, increasing vehicle emissions, poorly maintained roads, and rapid urbanization. During the dry season, dust particles often become more visible, covering streets, buildings, and even the surrounding hills.
Environmental advocates emphasize that solving the issue requires more than criticism. They highlight that collective responsibility-from government authorities to local communities and individual citizens-is essential. Simple actions such as reducing unnecessary vehicle use, planting trees, managing waste properly, and enforcing environmental regulations can significantly contribute to reducing pollution.
Public awareness campaigns are also being encouraged to promote sustainable habits and environmental responsibility. As Nepal continues its development journey, balancing infrastructure growth with environmental protection remains a critical challenge.
Many citizens are now calling for stronger pollution control measures and greater public participation to help restore the country’s clean and healthy environment.
“Reducing pollution is not only the responsibility of institutions-it begins with small actions from each of us,” environmental activists say.FB_IMG_1773101523466-1773102021.jpg
Nepal’s future environmental health will depend on how quickly and collectively such actions are taken.
