Kathmandu - As the March 5 elections approach, major political parties in Nepal have incorporated climate change priorities into their election manifestos, signaling a growing recognition of environmental challenges and the need for sustainable development policies.
The Nepali Congress has emphasized measures such as controlling air pollution, expanding green and renewable energy, and promoting carbon trading mechanisms. The party states that strengthening environmental governance and reducing pollution in urban areas will be among its key priorities if elected.
Similarly, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and the Communist Party of Nepal have focused on climate finance and compensation, highlighting the importance of securing international support for countries vulnerable to climate impacts. Their manifestos also stress the need for stronger advocacy for Nepal’s interests in global climate negotiations.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party has placed climate justice, environmental security, and climate diplomacy at the center of its environmental agenda. The party has proposed several initiatives aimed at addressing climate risks while ensuring fair and inclusive policies for affected communities.
Nepal is considered highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, glacier melt, and environmental degradation. Analysts say the inclusion of climate-related commitments in party manifestos reflects increasing public awareness and pressure on political leaders to respond with concrete policies.
