  • Rising Public Concern Over Garbage Mismanagement in Pokhara: Calls for Immediate Action
Rising Public Concern Over Garbage Mismanagement in Pokhara: Calls for Immediate Action

Pokhara, Nepal - Residents and visitors in Pokhara have voiced growing frustration over the increasing problem of improperly discarded garbage in many areas of the city. Locals report that waste is being dumped haphazardly at multiple locations, with garbage remaining uncollected for extended periods, creating unsightly and unhygienic conditions.
Pokhara, renowned as one of Nepal’s most popular tourist destinations, attracts both domestic and international travelers for its natural beauty, including Phewa Lake, mountain views, and cultural heritage. However, the mounting waste management issue is raising serious concerns among citizens and business owners alike, who warn that such conditions could harm the city’s reputation and public health.
“Seeing garbage lying around for weeks is disappointing, especially in a city promoted as a top tourist destination. It not only affects the environment but also impacts public well-being,” noted a local resident, who requested anonymity.
Environmental advocates in the city argue that ineffective waste collection and disposal practices are contributing to the problem. They also highlight the potential risks of pollution to Pokhara’s scenic landscapes and waterways, including Phewa Lake, if immediate corrective measures are not taken.
Experts emphasize that sustainable waste management is essential not only for environmental protection but also for maintaining Pokhara’s tourism appeal - a key source of livelihood for many in the region.
In response to the public outcry, community members are urging the Pokhara Metropolitan City Office, relevant municipal bodies, and environmental agencies to prioritize the issue. They request improved coordination for regular garbage collection, effective public awareness campaigns, and long-term strategies for solid waste management.
A spokesperson from the metropolitan city’s sanitation department said officials are aware of the complaints and are working on action plans to address the waste accumulation - including increasing the frequency of garbage collection in affected areas and enhancing monitoring systems. However, no specific timeline has yet been provided.
As the city moves forward, sustainable and community-inclusive solutions will be crucial to ensuring that Pokhara remains clean, healthy, and attractive to both residents and tourists.
