Kathmandu, Nepal - In a powerful display of climate commitment and youth engagement, Nepal joined the global community in responding to the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ urgent call for a clean energy revolution. Under the theme “A Moment of Opportunity: Supercharging the New Energy Era,” the UN chief’s address was broadcast worldwide, igniting dialogue and action in countries from New York to Nepal.
In Kathmandu, the United Nations in Nepal marked the moment through a youth-led dialogue and watch party, amplifying voices of the next generation and their role in the nation's green energy transformation. The event underscored Nepal’s climate leadership through its latest climate commitment, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0, which outlines ambitious yet achievable goals:
✅ Achieving net-zero emissions by 2045
✅ Building resilience to climate-induced shocks
✅ Ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition
✅ Accelerating hydropower and clean energy development
Nepal’s NDC 3.0 sets a clear vision for a sustainable future, positioning the country as a climate-forward nation despite its limited historical emissions. The watch party, hosted with support from UNDP Nepal and FAO Nepal, served as both a celebration of climate ambition and a rallying cry for concrete action.
Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, emphasized, “This is Nepal’s moment to lead. The youth are not just the future-they are the present force of change. Through clean energy, we can power development, equity, and environmental justice.”
As nations worldwide grapple with intensifying climate crises, Nepal’s proactive stance demonstrates how smaller nations can lead big transformations through strategic partnerships, indigenous solutions, and youth-led initiatives.
