Kathmandu, Nepal - In an ambitious step towards tackling the intertwined issues of climate change, labour migration, gender equality, and corporate accountability, a national-level "Multi-Stakeholder Policy Dialogue on Labour Migration, Gender, and Climate Change in the Context of Business and Human Rights" was convened in Kathmandu on June 20, 2025. The event, held under the One-UN approach in Nepal, brought together key actors, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNDP, and UN Women, along with prominent diplomatic missions and development partners.
The dialogue underscored the urgent need for a cross-sectoral approach to address these interconnected challenges. Central to the discussions was the integration of gender-responsive policies, sustainable migration practices, and climate action with responsible business standards. Emphasis was placed on facilitating regular migration pathways for women, particularly domestic migrant workers, while safeguarding their rights and ensuring equitable access to services and protections both in Nepal and in destination countries.
As Nepal grapples with the complexities of these critical issues, the dialogue highlighted the importance of transitioning to sustainable and inclusive frameworks that align with global commitments on human rights and sustainable development. It marked a significant milestone in fostering collaboration among policymakers, civil society, and international partners for a future that champions equity, resilience, and human dignity.
The event was supported by the European Union in Nepal, Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal, European Union in Thailand, Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok, and other regional partners.
This collaborative initiative represents a positive stride towards ensuring that Nepal’s policies on labour migration and climate action are not only inclusive but also a benchmark for sustainable development in the region.
