Kathmandu, June 26, 2025 – A significant step towards enhancing the welfare of Nepali migrant workers has been taken with the official launch of the ‘HaMi’ mobile application. Developed under the Korea International Cooperation Agency’s (KOICA) ongoing project “Strengthening Stage-wise Support System for the Stable Reintegration of Returnee Migrants in Nepal” (2022–2028), this initiative is a key milestone in improving the lives of migrants throughout their migration journey.
The name ‘HaMi’, an acronym for Happy Migration, symbolizes collective well-being, growth, and mutual care. The app serves as a one-stop solution offering tailored services across three phases of migration: pre-departure, employment abroad, and reintegration upon return. Migrants can access financial and psychological training, essential in-service information, and post-return support like entrepreneurship guidance and resettlement assistance.
The launch event in Kathmandu was attended by over 100 dignitaries, including H.E. Park Tae Young, South Korean Ambassador to Nepal; Hon. Sharat Singh Bhandari, Nepal’s Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security (MoLESS); and representatives from the Embassy of Switzerland, civil society organizations, returnee migrants, and the media.
Ambassador Park emphasized the timeliness of the app, highlighting its importance for a nation where remittances from migrant workers contribute approximately 25% to the GDP. “We are proud to support a digital platform that facilitates safe migration and enhances the quality of life for Nepali workers,” said Ambassador Park.
Mr. Kong Mooheon, Country Director of KOICA Nepal, described HaMi as a “digital companion” designed to safeguard the rights of migrant workers while promoting their overall well-being. He affirmed KOICA’s commitment to sustainable migration practices through continuous support across all stages of the migration cycle.
Minister Bhandari acknowledged the app's potential to integrate with Nepal's efforts to develop a comprehensive employment information system for returnees. He expressed gratitude for South Korea’s support, underscoring its role in advocating for better working conditions and wage protections for Nepali migrant workers globally.
The HaMi app is now available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store under the names ‘HaMi’ or ‘K-HaMi’. Its continuous development will focus on ensuring it remains a practical tool for enhancing the quality of life and rights of migrant workers.
This launch marks a collaborative milestone, underscoring the shared commitment of Nepal and South Korea to the sustainable development and well-being of migrant workers.
