Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi Flood: UN Reports 1,399 Deaths and More Than 5,100 People Still Missing

Kathmandu, Nepal - 19 September 2026: The humanitarian situation following the devastating Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods remains critical, with thousands of people still unaccounted for and communities facing major access and displacement challenges, according to the United Nations Nepal Rasuwa–Bhotekoshi Flood Situation Report No. 8, covering the period from 8-15 September and published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Nepal.
The report states that the floods have claimed 1,399 lives, while 5,179 people remain missing. A total of 13,742 people have been rescued, highlighting the continuing scale of search, rescue and recovery operations more than three weeks after the disaster.
The disaster has also caused extensive damage to physical infrastructure. At least 7,570 buildings have been damaged, while 2,155 people remain sheltered in 30 displacement centres. Others displaced by the floods have moved to Kathmandu and other locations.
Humanitarian assistance has so far reached 46,829 people across 17 affected municipalities. Support includes food assistance for 28,925 people, restored water supplies for 26,550 people, emergency shelter and relief items for 17,543 people, and psychosocial support for 9,118 people.
The UN report identifies Rasuwa's damaged roads and bridges as a major continuing obstacle. Many communities remain cut off and are dependent on air deliveries, while heavy rainfall continues to disrupt helicopter operations and other relief efforts. In some areas, road access can fluctuate between approximately six and 12 hours.
The report also highlights the difficulty of finding suitable land for transitional shelters, particularly because water and sanitation services must be considered before new sites can be established. Shelter resources were reported as ready at 29 displacement centres, while humanitarian partners continue coordination through the Coordination Hub in Bidur and Rasuwa.
The national Cash Working Group has agreed to provide NPR 15,000 per household every 15 days for up to three months, using the same value for multipurpose cash assistance, while emphasizing stronger coordination to prevent duplication.
The latest UN assessment underscores that the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi disaster has moved beyond an immediate rescue emergency into a complex phase of humanitarian relief, displacement, infrastructure recovery, public health, water and sanitation, and longer-term reconstruction.
