UNEP Report Warns of Accelerating Climate Crisis as Arctic Permafrost Continues to Warm

Kathmandu, 2nd June 2026 - New findings highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reveal that the global climate crisis is intensifying, with rising greenhouse gas emissions continuing to reshape ecosystems, economies and communities worldwide. A series of climate data visualizations released by UNEP show alarming trends ranging from increasing global temperatures to the rapid warming of Arctic permafrost, while also pointing to encouraging progress in clean energy adoption and emission reductions in some countries.
One of the most concerning indicators presented in the report is the warming of permafrost—permanently frozen ground found across the Arctic and high-latitude regions. The map accompanying the report illustrates widespread temperature increases in permafrost areas across Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia. Scientists warn that thawing permafrost can release significant amounts of stored carbon dioxide and methane, creating a feedback loop that could further accelerate global warming.
According to UNEP, global greenhouse gas emissions reached a record level of nearly 58 billion tonnes in 2024, while the average global surface temperature was approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels. Researchers link these trends to an increase in extreme weather events, including floods, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires that are affecting millions of people around the world.
The report further warns that if current emission trajectories continue, global temperatures could rise by between 2.5°C and 4.6°C during this century. Such warming could trigger irreversible climate tipping points, including widespread coral reef loss, accelerated melting of major ice sheets and significant sea-level rise. Climate change is also projected to have severe economic consequences, potentially reducing global economic output substantially by the end of the century.
Despite these challenges, UNEP highlights signs of progress. Several countries have begun reducing or stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions through investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate-friendly technologies. Experts stress, however, that the pace of action must increase significantly to meet international climate goals and limit the most severe impacts of global warming.
As the world prepares to observe World Environment Day, environmental advocates emphasize that climate action and water security are deeply interconnected. Strengthening climate resilience, protecting ecosystems and accelerating the transition to clean energy are increasingly viewed as essential steps toward safeguarding both people and the planet.
