Kathmandu, Nepal - In a groundbreaking step towards strengthening public health and health security, Nepal has become the third country globally to introduce the National Essential In-vitro Diagnostics List (NEIDL). This significant initiative, developed by the National Public Health Laboratory under the Ministry of Health and Population, aligns with the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Essential Diagnostics List.
The NEIDL is a comprehensive guide aimed at ensuring access to quality and timely diagnostic services across all levels of the healthcare system in Nepal. It identifies critical diagnostic tests for communicable and non-communicable diseases, providing a framework that supports Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This initiative is expected to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients while enhancing the efficiency of public healthcare services.
The official launch event, held in the presence of Honorable Minister of Health and Population, Mr. Pradip Paudel, marks a key milestone for Nepal’s healthcare system. The initiative was made possible with the support of The Pandemic Fund, which has been instrumental in bolstering emergency preparedness and health resilience in the region.
The NEIDL will play a pivotal role in addressing public health challenges by improving diagnostic capabilities and ensuring equitable access to essential health services, particularly in underserved areas.
This achievement not only highlights Nepal’s commitment to strengthening its health infrastructure but also sets an example for other nations aiming to enhance health security and preparedness.
