Kathmandu, Nepal - Upama Karki, originally from Udayapur district of Nepal, has established herself as a promising professional in the global technology sector, currently serving as an engineer at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon, United States. She has been working with the multinational semiconductor company for the past one and a half years, contributing to efforts aimed at improving chip manufacturing quality and minimizing production defects.
Upama's academic journey reflects determination, perseverance, and a strong commitment to scientific research. After completing her Master's degree in Physics from Tribhuvan University, she pursued higher studies in the United States and earned a PhD specializing in Spintronics from the University of Alabama. Her expertise in advanced physics and semiconductor-related research helped pave the way for her professional career in one of the world's leading technology companies.
The path to success was not without challenges. During her years of study and research, Upama balanced the responsibilities of motherhood while adapting to a new language, culture, and financial realities. Despite these obstacles, she continued to advance academically and professionally, demonstrating resilience and dedication.
According to Upama, one of the most difficult aspects of living abroad is being away from family and loved ones. Nevertheless, she remains committed to both her professional ambitions and family responsibilities, successfully maintaining a balance between the two.
Looking ahead, Upama hopes to return to Nepal and contribute to society by inspiring young people, particularly those from rural communities, to pursue higher education and careers in science and technology. She attributes much of her success to her parents, whose unwavering commitment to education provided the foundation for her achievements.
Her story serves as a powerful example of how determination, education, and family support can help Nepali youth reach international platforms and contribute to cutting-edge technological innovation.
