Damauli, Nepal - A significant milestone in Nepal’s energy infrastructure development was marked with the official groundbreaking of the Lekhnath-Damauli 220 kV Transmission Line Project. The event brought together the Nepal Electricity Authority, representatives from the German Embassy Kathmandu, and development partners including GIZ Nepal and KfW Development Bank.
The project reflects a long-standing collaboration between Nepal and Germany aimed at building a more reliable, efficient, and climate-friendly energy system.
Co-financed by the Government of Nepal and Germany through KfW, the project carries an estimated total investment of EUR 100 million, with approximately EUR 50 million provided as a grant by the German government. The initiative will involve the construction of a 45-kilometer, 220 kV double-circuit transmission line, along with modern gas-insulated substations in Lekhnath and Damauli.
Once completed, the transmission line is expected to handle up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity, significantly enhancing Nepal’s capacity to transmit clean hydropower across regions. This comes at a time when the country is steadily increasing its hydropower generation and requires stronger transmission networks to ensure efficient distribution.
Officials highlighted that the project will contribute to improving the reliability of electricity supply for households, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and businesses. By reducing outages and strengthening grid stability, it is expected to support essential public services and improve overall quality of life.
The adoption of double-circuit transmission lines and gas-insulated substations also represents a move toward more efficient land use and reduced environmental and social disruption. These modern systems are designed to be more resilient, enclosed, and less prone to external damage, thereby minimizing service interruptions.
Beyond infrastructure, the project is anticipated to stimulate local economic growth by meeting rising energy demands, supporting industries, and creating opportunities for employment during and after construction.
Energy experts view the project as a crucial step in Nepal’s transition toward a sustainable energy future, ensuring that the benefits of its abundant hydropower resources can be delivered more effectively to communities.
The initiative further underscores Germany’s continued commitment to supporting Nepal’s clean energy ambitions through technical cooperation and financial assistance, reinforcing a partnership that prioritizes both development and environmental sustainability.
