Twin Powerful Earthquakes Strike Venezuela, Raising Fears of Major Humanitarian Crisis

Caracas, Venezuela | June 25, 2026
Venezuela has been struck by two powerful earthquakes in quick succession, triggering widespread destruction and raising concerns over significant loss of life and extensive infrastructure damage.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck western Venezuela on June 24, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake. The epicenters were located near the country's Caribbean coast, approximately 160 kilometers west of the capital, Caracas. The shallow depth of the earthquakes intensified the ground shaking across a large area.
Preliminary reports indicate that several buildings collapsed in Caracas and nearby regions, trapping residents beneath debris and prompting large-scale rescue operations. Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, medical personnel, and volunteers, have been deployed to affected areas as authorities work to locate survivors and assess the extent of the damage.
The earthquakes disrupted transportation networks, damaged public infrastructure, and caused power and communication outages in multiple locations. Authorities have also reported damage to key facilities, including parts of the country's main international airport, leading to service disruptions and emergency measures.
Venezuelan officials have declared a state of emergency and urged residents to remain cautious due to the risk of aftershocks. Hospitals have activated emergency response plans and increased staffing levels to accommodate a growing number of injured individuals.
The USGS has warned that the disaster could result in high casualties and widespread damage, although official nationwide casualty figures have not yet been confirmed. Rescue and damage assessment operations remain ongoing, and authorities are expected to release further information as the situation develops.
The twin earthquakes rank among the strongest seismic events recorded in Venezuela's modern history and serve as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to major natural disasters. Humanitarian organizations and international partners are closely monitoring the situation as communities across the country begin the challenging process of recovery.
