Panchthar, Nepal | May 23 - Continuous overnight rainfall triggered floods and landslides in Yangwarak Rural Municipality of Panchthar district, causing extensive damage to public infrastructure and affecting local communities in eastern Nepal. Initial reports indicate that several physical structures, including houses and transport infrastructure, have been severely impacted.
According to available local information, floodwaters surged through the Dobhane Khola and Tamor River corridors, damaging structures built along riverbanks and sections near the Mid-Hill Highway. Some residential houses were reportedly swept away as water levels rose rapidly during the night.
One of the major reported losses includes the destruction of an under-construction concrete motorable bridge that connected Panchthar and Terhathum. The incident is expected to disrupt mobility and local connectivity in the affected area. In addition, damage has also been reported to infrastructure associated with a hydropower facility operating in the Yangwarak area, alongside multiple other local structures.
The incident highlights the continuing vulnerability of Nepal’s hill districts to intense rainfall, flash floods, and landslide-related disasters, particularly in river corridors and infrastructure development zones.
