Landslide Blocks Beni–Jomsom–Korala Road, Disrupting Travel to Mustang and Muktinath

Myagdi, Nepal - The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, a vital route connecting Mustang district with the national highway network, has remained obstructed since Tuesday morning after a landslide struck Mahabhir in Annapurna Rural Municipality.
According to local authorities, rocks and mud fell onto the roadway from a steep cliff above the road section, completely disrupting transportation along the 76-kilometer Beni-Jomsom corridor. Vehicles traveling from Beni toward Mustang and from Jomsom toward Beni were stranded midway after the road was blocked.
The obstruction has affected local residents, transport operators, tourists, and pilgrims traveling to Muktinath Temple, one of Nepal’s major religious and tourism destinations. The road is widely used by domestic and international visitors heading to Mustang and the trans-Himalayan region.
Information Officer Sagar Timilsina of the District Police Office said that efforts are underway to clear the debris and reopen the road by mobilizing heavy equipment from the Department of Roads. Authorities have urged travelers to remain cautious and seek updates before beginning their journey.
Mahabhir has long been considered a high-risk landslide zone. Local officials say landslides frequently occur from cliffs located nearly 500 meters above the roadway, particularly during rainfall. Even light rain can trigger mud and rockfalls in the area, repeatedly disrupting transportation and increasing the risk of accidents.
The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of mountain road infrastructure in Nepal, especially along key tourism and pilgrimage routes that are highly sensitive to weather-related disasters.
