Kathmandu, May 3 - Continuous rainfall over the past few days has triggered multiple landslides across Nepal, leading to the complete obstruction of several key highways and road sections, significantly affecting mobility and raising safety concerns.
According to Nepal Police spokesperson Abin Narayan Kafle, landslides that occurred on Sunday morning have fully blocked multiple strategic routes. These include the Kantilokpath at Pangdur in Lalitpur’s Bagmati Rural Municipality-3, the Bhaluwang-Pyuthan road section at Khahare Khola in Pyuthan, another section of Kantilokpath at Bharyangdanda in Makwanpur, and the Mid-Hill Highway at Bimire Bhanjyang in Lamjung.
Police further confirmed that the Araniko Highway at Kodari in Sindhupalchok, which was obstructed by a landslide on Baisakh 16, remains closed and has yet to resume operation. This route is considered a critical trade and connectivity corridor linking Nepal with China.
Meanwhile, some partially affected roads have reopened for limited use. The Mid-Hill Highway at Bokhim in Bhojpur, previously blocked by flooding on Baisakh 12, and the Beni-Jomsom road section in Myagdi, disrupted by a landslide on Baisakh 16, are currently operating on a one-way basis.
Authorities have highlighted that with the onset of the rainy season, the risk of landslides and floods increases significantly, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions. Travelers are urged to exercise caution, stay updated on road conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel through high-risk areas.
Experts note that recurring disruptions on key highways underline Nepal’s ongoing vulnerability to climate-induced disasters, emphasizing the need for resilient infrastructure planning, early warning systems, and sustainable land management practices.
