  • Overnight Flash Flood Along Roshi River, BP Highway Disrupted
Overnight Flash Flood Along Roshi River, BP Highway Disrupted

Kavrepalanchok, Nepal - A Scorpio jeep was left stranded overnight after a sudden flash flood in the Roshi River inundated sections of the BP Highway, highlighting the growing risks of extreme weather events along one of Nepal’s most vital road corridors.
The incident occurred amid continuous rainfall that caused the Roshi River to swell rapidly, flooding low-lying road sections and temporary diversions constructed along the highway. Visuals from the scene show the vehicle partially submerged and immobilized in fast-moving water under low visibility conditions.
Highway Severely Affected by Flooding
Recent reports confirm that persistent rainfall triggered flooding in the Roshi River, washing away temporary diversion roads and halting traffic movement along the BP Highway. Authorities were forced to suspend vehicular movement as large stretches of the road became unsafe.
The affected sections-including areas like Chowkidanda, Gimdi, and Kalidunga-have repeatedly suffered damage due to floods and landslides, especially where temporary routes have been built directly on riverbeds.
Rescue Risks and Night-Time Dangers
Although official details specific to the Scorpio vehicle remain limited, similar incidents in the same flooding event indicate that vehicles-including motorcycles and electric vehicles-were swept away or trapped, with several people requiring rescue.
Night-time conditions significantly increased the danger, as reduced visibility and rising water levels made it difficult for drivers to assess road safety. Authorities have repeatedly warned travelers to avoid crossing river-based diversions during rainfall.
Recurring Vulnerability of BP Highway
The BP Highway, a critical link between eastern Nepal and Kathmandu, has been highly vulnerable to climate-induced disasters. Floods in the Roshi River have repeatedly damaged infrastructure, washing away kilometers of roadway and disrupting transport and livelihoods.
Experts note that the reliance on temporary diversions-often built along riverbanks or beds-has increased exposure to flash floods, especially during unpredictable weather patterns.
Authorities Urge Caution
Local police and traffic authorities have urged travelers to:
Avoid night travel during heavy rainfall
Check real-time road updates before departure
Refrain from attempting river crossings during floods
Efforts are ongoing to restore damaged sections of the highway, but continued rainfall remains a major challenge.
Ecosphere News Insight
This incident reflects a broader environmental and infrastructural concern: the intersection of climate variability and fragile road engineering in mountainous regions. Without long-term, climate-resilient infrastructure planning, such flash flood risks are expected to intensify-posing threats to both human safety and national connectivity.
