Kīlauea Volcano Erupts in Dramatic Lava Fountains, Ash Plumes Rise Over Hawaii

Kathmandu - One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kīlauea Volcano in the U.S. state of Hawaii, has once again erupted, sending spectacular lava fountains high into the air and releasing plumes of ash and volcanic gas over the surrounding landscape.
According to scientists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the latest eruption began inside the summit crater of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. Lava fountains surged hundreds of meters into the sky, creating a dramatic display of molten rock, glowing lava streams, and thick columns of volcanic smoke.
The eruption is part of an ongoing series of eruptive episodes that have been occurring since late 2024. Scientists monitoring the volcano say these events often occur in short bursts lasting several hours to a day, followed by quieter periods as magma pressure fluctuates beneath the summit.
Authorities temporarily restricted access to parts of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park due to falling volcanic debris, ash, and strong volcanic gas emissions. In some nearby areas, ashfall and fine volcanic fragments—known as tephra—have been reported, which can pose risks to respiratory health, aviation safety, and visibility on roads.
Despite the dramatic eruption, scientists report that the lava flows remain confined within the summit crater area and are not currently threatening nearby communities. However, experts continue to closely monitor seismic activity, gas emissions, and ground deformation around the volcano.
Kīlauea Volcano sits on the Hawaiian hotspot, a geological zone where magma from deep within the Earth’s mantle rises toward the surface. This unique tectonic setting makes Kīlauea one of the most frequently erupting volcanoes on Earth and a key site for volcanic research and monitoring.
While eruptions like this can disrupt tourism and air travel in the region, they also provide scientists with valuable insights into volcanic processes and Earth’s dynamic geology.
