Malé, 25 July 2025 - In a symbolic moment of environmental diplomacy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu planted mango saplings in Malé, reinforcing a shared commitment to sustainability and climate action.
The joint planting event marked the convergence of two powerful green initiatives: India’s emotional and nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and the Maldives’ ambitious 5 Million Trees Programme.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Climate Action
Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative encourages individuals to plant a tree in honor of their mothers, blending environmental stewardship with personal emotion. Since its launch, it has sparked mass participation across India, with over 100 crore trees reportedly planted.
On the other hand, President Muizzu’s 5 Million Trees Programme, announced during COP28, aims to plant five million trees across the island nation to combat climate vulnerabilities and restore native ecosystems. Launched officially on World Environment Day 2024, the initiative has already seen more than 600,000 trees planted, with over 6 million pledged by various sectors.
A Ceremony with Deeper Meaning
At the ceremonial event in Malé:
Modi and Muizzu planted mango saplings, symbolizing both friendship and future growth.
Their action represented a fusion of individual responsibility and national commitment to climate resilience.
The moment served not only as a diplomatic gesture but also as a powerful reminder that environmental action can be deeply personal and widely impactful.
Eco-Diplomacy in Action
The Maldives' initiative focuses on planting native and endangered species across its fragile island ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity and adapting to climate threats like rising sea levels. Meanwhile, India’s campaign aims to embed a culture of tree-planting among its people, one tree-and one mother-at a time.
Together, these initiatives show how climate diplomacy can move beyond summits and statements, taking root through symbolic acts that inspire real-world change.
