Tilottama, Nepal - Tilottama Municipality has emerged as a beacon of sustainability and innovation in Nepal, thanks to the collaborative efforts of UNDP Nepal, local leaders, and community stakeholders. In a recent celebration, the municipality showcased its transformative initiatives under the "Clean Tilottama, Green Tilottama" campaign, which earned global recognition as a citizen-led environmental success story.
At the heart of these efforts is the Waste Processing and Knowledge Centre (WPKC), a nationally acclaimed hub for waste management and circular economy solutions. Supported by UNDP Nepal’s Promoting Green Recovery Project (PGRP), WPKC has implemented groundbreaking strategies such as source segregation, plastic briquetting, and the plantation of over 3,000 trees along Tilottama’s streets. These initiatives exemplify how challenges can be transformed into sustainable opportunities for environmental progress.
UNDP Nepal Resident Representative Kyoko Yokosuka commended Mayor Ram Krishna Khand and his team for their dedication to fostering community-driven environmental action. “Tilottama Municipality’s achievements demonstrate the power of collective action and innovative thinking in addressing environmental challenges,” said Yokosuka.
In addition to its environmental strides, Tilottama is pioneering digital governance. The municipality has successfully piloted an AI chatbot for public grievance handling, a model now being replicated in seven other municipalities across Nepal. This technological innovation underscores Tilottama’s commitment to enhancing citizen engagement and improving municipal services.
UNDP Nepal has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Tilottama in its journey toward a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive future. As this partnership continues to thrive, it sets a promising precedent for sustainable urban development across the country.
