Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed the importance of scientifically utilizing Nepal's forest resources to achieve sustainable development while preserving the country’s biodiversity. Speaking at a program in Kathmandu, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for the efficient use of forest products, particularly mature sal trees, which he stated should be identified and utilized before becoming unproductive.
Prime Minister Oli underscored that trees and plants within protected areas, such as national parks and reserves, must remain untouched to safeguard Nepal’s ecological balance. However, he suggested that other forested areas could be sustainably managed to derive economic and environmental benefits for the nation.
The Prime Minister also addressed recent criticism of his statement regarding Nepal's tiger population, which he said had been misunderstood. He clarified that while the growing number of tigers is a conservation success, it has led to increased instances of human-wildlife conflict, including attacks on settlements near forested areas. He reiterated that environmental conservation must ensure the safety and well-being of humanity, as it is impossible to protect the environment if people feel insecure.
Referring to global environmental challenges, Prime Minister Oli expressed concern over the lack of commitment from some nations to the Paris Agreement on climate change. He called for unified global action and cooperation to combat environmental threats, adding that Nepal is set to host the Sagarmatha Dialogue to promote international collaboration on climate issues and sustainable development.
The Sagarmatha Dialogue aims to serve as a platform for fostering discussions on global environmental policies and Nepal’s role in advancing climate action. Prime Minister Oli stated that timely efforts are essential to addressing these challenges effectively.
