Humla, Nepal - July 22, 2025
In a major step toward improving infrastructure in Nepal’s remote mountain districts, the construction of a Bailey Bridge over the Loti Karnali River in Chankheli Rural Municipality, Humla, has been successfully completed. The new crossing is expected to significantly enhance mobility for locals, offering a safer and more efficient connection between isolated settlements and key transit routes.
The newly installed Bailey Bridge paves the way for easier travel via Chankheli Lek to Mugu, Jumla, and ultimately Surkhet, strengthening inter-district connectivity across western Nepal’s rugged terrain. Previously, villagers had to either cross the river under hazardous conditions or take long, exhausting detours.
“This bridge will not only save time but save lives,” said a local resident. “It connects us to opportunities we could not reach before.”
The Bailey Bridge is part of a broader push to develop essential infrastructure in Humla-one of Nepal’s most geographically challenging and underserved districts. With this development, remote communities are now one step closer to vital services such as education, healthcare, and markets.
Officials and locals alike believe that the bridge will also support small-scale trade and potentially promote ecotourism in the long run. By improving access to and from highland settlements, the bridge is expected to foster local economic activity and reduce the sense of isolation felt by many in these regions.
As Nepal continues its efforts to build inclusive development pathways, such grassroots infrastructure projects represent tangible progress. The Loti Karnali belibridge stands as a symbol of hope and connection-literally bridging the gap between remoteness and opportunity.
