Kathmandu, Nepal – The Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), in collaboration with the Kirtipur Municipality, hosted the Final Dissemination Workshop on Monday in Kathmandu to share the results of their groundbreaking plastic waste management initiative.
The project, titled "Using Innovative Technology to Establish Plastic-Managed Communities and the Rivers in Kirtipur Municipality and Adjacent Wards of Neighboring Municipalities in the Kathmandu Valley," has been a significant stride towards sustainable urban development in Nepal. Funded by the PLEASE Project (Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia) and supported by the World Bank with implementing assistance from UNOPS, this initiative reflects a united effort to tackle the mounting plastic waste challenge in South Asia.
The workshop was attended by municipal leaders, environmental experts, and representatives from various local and international organizations. The event showcased the innovative solutions applied during the project, including advanced waste segregation techniques, community engagement models, and river-cleaning technologies.
CIUD emphasized the importance of grassroots involvement, highlighting the success achieved by mobilizing local communities to take ownership of their waste management practices. Through this project, Kirtipur and its neighboring areas have become examples of plastic-managed communities, setting a standard for similar initiatives across the region.
In his address, a representative from CIUD remarked, “This project not only addresses the immediate problem of plastic pollution but also lays a foundation for long-term environmental resilience in the Kathmandu Valley.”
Attendees expressed their appreciation for the project’s impact, with many pledging continued support to scale its approach to other municipalities in Nepal.
The Final Dissemination Workshop underscored the collective potential of innovative technology, community action, and international collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals. With the momentum generated by this project, the vision of a plastic-free South Asia appears more attainable than ever.
