Habitat for Humanity Pilots Community-Designed Housing Model in East Africa

Africa - Across East Africa, millions of low-income families continue to live in housing that is unsafe and highly vulnerable to extreme weather events such as floods, heatwaves and heavy rainfall. Limited access to skilled labour, reliable construction materials and essential services has made home upgrades or rebuilding financially impossible for many households, reinforcing cycles of poverty and risk.
In response, Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter has partnered with Easy Housing to pilot an innovative affordable housing initiative known as Tutajenga, a Swahili term meaning “we will build.” The initiative aims to address housing challenges by placing communities at the centre of design, construction and decision-making.
According to Habitat for Humanity, Tutajenga is not a one-size-fits-all housing solution. Instead, it is a community-designed approach that reflects local needs, climate conditions, cultural practices and economic realities. By working directly with East African communities, the project seeks to ensure that homes are not only affordable, but also durable, climate-resilient and socially appropriate.
The pilot focuses on reducing housing costs by improving access to trained local builders, strengthening supply chains for quality materials, and promoting incremental housing upgrades that families can afford over time. This approach allows households to improve safety and living conditions without the burden of unaffordable upfront costs.
Habitat for Humanity notes that extreme weather linked to climate change has intensified housing vulnerability across the region, making innovation in shelter systems increasingly urgent. Through Tutajenga, the organisation aims to demonstrate how locally driven, scalable housing models can help bridge the gap between affordability, safety and resilience.
If successful, the Tutajenga pilot could inform wider housing policies and private-sector engagement in East Africa, offering a replicable model for inclusive and climate-smart housing solutions in other low-income regions as well.
