Conference in London Addresses Challenges Faced by Nepali Students in the UK

London, January 29 - A high-level conference focused on the challenges faced by Nepali students studying in the United Kingdom was successfully held on January 29 at the Embassy of Nepal in London. The event was organised and led by the Britain-Nepal Society, with strong logistical and institutional support from the Embassy of Nepal.
The conference was hosted with the support of the Chargé d’Affaires of Nepal to the UK, Mr Bipin Duwadi, and his embassy team, whose facilitation played a key role in bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders concerned with Nepali students’ welfare and academic experience in the UK.
Around 55 participants attended the conference, representing UK universities and colleges, relevant UK government ministries, Nepali community organisations in the UK, former Nepali alumni of UK universities, student representatives, and organisations such as UKCISA and CNSUK. Participation also extended beyond the UK, with the British Embassy and British Council in Kathmandu, as well as Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, joining the discussions remotely.
The conference provided a platform for open dialogue on recurring issues faced by Nepali students, including gaps in pre-departure information, accommodation difficulties, and access to reliable guidance and support systems after arrival in the UK. Discussions emphasised the need for coordinated and practical solutions involving both academic institutions and community stakeholders.
A strong consensus emerged on a forward-looking strategy to improve student support mechanisms. Key proposals included the formation of a multi-disciplinary steering group to guide future initiatives, the establishment of thematic working groups to examine specific problem areas and recommend solutions, and the possible creation of a permanent student support office to offer information, advice, and assistance to Nepali students in the UK.FB_IMG_1769855371591-1769855568.jpg

While participants acknowledged that significant work remains ahead, the conference was widely viewed as an important step towards building a collaborative and committed network of stakeholders. The shared sense of responsibility and determination was seen as a positive foundation for implementing meaningful improvements.
Organisers confirmed that a detailed conference report will be prepared and circulated in the coming days to sustain the momentum generated by the event and to guide future action. The organisers also expressed gratitude to all participants for their active engagement and constructive contributions.
