Devotees across Nepal are observing Harishayani Ekadashi today, a deeply spiritual and environmentally meaningful occasion that marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four-month holy period of Lord Vishnu’s cosmic rest. Celebrated on the 11th day of the bright fortnight of Ashadh (June–July), this day carries both religious reverence and ecological wisdom passed down through generations.
One of the most cherished traditions associated with Harishayani Ekadashi is the planting of the sacred Tulsi plant (Holy Basil). Widely regarded as a symbol of purity, health, and spiritual devotion, Tulsi is also known for its air-purifying and medicinal properties. Communities across Nepal, from rural households to urban temples, observed the ritual of Tulsi plantation-reaffirming the timeless bond between nature and culture.
In many homes and temples, devotees observed fasting, meditation, and prayers, reflecting the belief that reducing food intake and practicing self-discipline helps purify the mind and body. This practice not only promotes personal wellness but also aligns with principles of sustainability and conscious living, resonating deeply with modern ecological values.
Environmentalists and spiritual leaders alike have highlighted the relevance of such traditional observances in today’s world. “Harishayani Ekadashi is more than just a religious day,” says cultural researcher Dr. Sushila Adhikari. “It teaches us to live in harmony with nature, to respect seasonal rhythms, and to embrace simplicity.”
The four-month period of Chaturmas, which begins today, is traditionally considered a time of reflection, restraint, and renewal. During this time, many people refrain from conducting big ceremonies such as marriages and instead focus on inner growth and environmental responsibility.
As the nation reflects on the values embodied in Harishayani Ekadashi, it becomes clear that ancient rituals continue to offer meaningful guidance in facing modern challenges—from climate change to mental health.
May this sacred day inspire peace, balance, and sustainability in all aspects of life.
